Summary

The Cattle Herd Terrain is located in an approximately 200-m segment along the middle TamaRiver downstream from the point the JR Hachiko Line crosses over the Tama River. The terrain is characterized by island-like rocks with a width of 0.5-5 m, a length of 1-50 m, and a height of 1-3 m. The strata of the terrain were formed during the Pliocene epoch of the Neogene period. During and after the 1920’s, people dug the strata to collect gravel and sand, which led to the riverbed becoming exposed. When the river swelled, the gravel in the river eroded the riverbed, resulting in the formation of narrow and deep ditches and potholes. Intensive erosion by gravel further deepened and widened the ditches, which led to the formation of the Cattle Herd Terrain. Interestingly, the terrain was not particularly eroded by Typhoon No. 3 in July 2000, suggesting that lateral erosion would require a larger amount of precipitation than experienced in that typhoon. On the other hand, dead lichen cover and the surface of the terrain peel off due to wind erosion. On an annual basis, the erosion of the terrain is mainly caused by swelling waters in typhoons, when cracks in the rocks allow pieces of rock to be chipped away.
