第１部では江戸時代を中心として、玉川上水右岸の１１の分水（後に砂川用水に統合）についてその歴史をまとめた。つまり、人々がどのようにして分水を開削し、維持、管理、利用してきたか。
さらに、そのための苦労や工夫について記した。
第２部では砂川用水を産業に利用した水車の歴史を、江戸時代から昭和まで小金井市を中心にまとめた。第３部では砂川用水の水を利用した水車はどこにあり、何に使われたか。
文書と聞き取り調査の両面から個々の水車についてまとめた。
第４部では技術史教育の１つの試みとして、小学校段階で水車をどのように扱うか実践してみた。その記録と、武蔵野の水車の技術についてまとめた。

Part I: We analyzed the history of 11 branch canals (that have now been integrated into the Sunagawa Yosui Canal ) on the right side of Tamagawa Josui Canal , in Edo period. We examined how people excavated, managed and utilized branch canals. Also, we analyzed how people struggled and devised to construct them.

Part II: We summarized the history of the utilization of Sunagawa Yosui Canal for industry in Koganei City , from the Edo period to the Showa period.

Part III: We conducted field hearing and analyzed documents to investigate the location and the usage of each of waterwheels on Sunagawa Yosui Canal

Part IV: As part of the classes in history of technology, elementary students had hands-on experience of using a waterwheel. Then they summarized the technology of waterwheels in the Musashino Region.
