研究内容要約 Research Summary |
Asarum species, such as Asarum tamaense and Asarum nipponicum, used to be distributed widely in the hilly zone of western Tokyo . But recently, their population has decreased due to urban development and illegal digging. They are now designated as endangered species. We studied the distribution, ecology and life history of Asarum tamaense growing around Nanakuni Pass on Tama Hills, in order to pave the way for the preservation of the Asarum species. It has been said that the plants of the Asarum species have little ability to expand their distribution, and the seed dispersion speed is only 10 cm per year. However, the fact is that plants themselves are also distributed by landslides and by streams running down slopes. Therefore, it is estimated that their dispersion speed is a lot faster than previously expected. The risk of the extinction of the Asarum species will be decreased by the proper preservation of their habitat. Of course, they may become extinct if their habitat is destroyed due to urban development. In order to preserve the Asarum species, it is urgently necessary to designate main habitats as protected areas, e.g. natural parks. |
